WELCOME TO OUR SITE
Health is a term that refers to a combination of the
absence of illness, the ability to cope with everyday activities,
physical fitness, and high quality of life. In any organism, health
can be said to be a "state of balance," or analogous to
homeostasis, and it also implies good prospects for continued
survival. Wellness is a term sometimes used to describe the
psychological state of being healthy, but is most often used in the
field of alternative medicine to describe one's state of being.
Health is maintained through the science of medicine, but can
also be improved by individual effort. Physical fitness, weight
loss, healthy eating, stress management training and stopping
smoking and other substance abuse are examples of steps to improve
one's health. Workplace programs are recognized by an increasingly
large number of companies for their value in improving health and
well-being of their employees, and increasing morale, loyalty and
productivity at work.

Eating an egg daily has risk for middle aged men
In the 1950s and ’60s, home economists raved about the nutritional benefits of eggs, and cookbooks churned out recipes for egg dishes that were hearty enough to serve as dinner. Then along came all those studies linking high cholesterol levels to heart disease and other problems. In the past decade, research has shown that LDL cholesterol particles vary with respect to their potential to clog arteries and cause heart disease. Adding an egg here or there to your diet may not raise your risk of heart disease even though it may raise your "bad" LDL cholesterol levels, according to a study ...

Pregnant woman's eating habits may affect her baby’s health even gender
At each stage, we have a different profile of risk or benefit. At the beginning of the life span, when tissues in our bodies are being organized in utero and in the first months of life, there is good reason to believe -- based on animal studies and in some human observations -- that sex hormones are very important in getting things organized properly. These hormones influence the way the brain is organized, the way the reproductive organs and cells develop, even the way immune function develops. Therefore, if mom is eating something or has in her body fat something that ...

Risk of psoriasis for same genetic diseases
Psoriasis, an autoimmune disease, causes the skin to become thicker because the growth of skin cells is out of control. In psoriasis, immune cells, which usually protect against infection, instead trigger the release of cytokines, which causes inflammation and the overproduction of skin cells. Other autoimmune diseases with similar side effects include lupus, which can lead to skin lesions, and dandruff. All diseases are complex, the result of different genes and environmental risk factors acting together in concert. But if NALP1 turns out to be one of the major genes involved in numerous autoimmune diseases, and if we can interrupt its ...

Teens and adolescents sleeplessness may follow depression
It is unfortunate that depression has brought such a spirited mind to its end. Depression is dangerous if left unattended. You couldn't help feeling let down as you ware battling against such tremendous odds. Insomnia can cause you to have anxiety and depression, and depression and anxiety can cause you to have insomnia. It’s a chicken-and-egg type of story. But research has shown that if one of the conditions is left untreated it can exacerbate the other condition. In 1980, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) created oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), defining it as "a pattern of negativistic, hostile and defiant behavior." ...

Factors affecting the health of older Americans
"Growing up" is viewed with anticipation, while "growing old" is regarded as something to dread. This feeling develops from viewing aging as a decline of physical and mental acuity and the fear of illness, loneliness and loss of independence. Aging and illness don't necessarily go together. Older adults are living longer and healthier lives. Advances in medical care, healthier lifestyles and better access to prevention information may keep them healthier and longer life.More than 95% of hip fractures among adults ages 65 and older are caused by falls (Grisso et al. 1991). These injuries can cause severe health problems and ...

Syphilis percentage increased in USA, Europe, Canada, China and several developing countries recently
Did Columbus and his men introduce the syphilis pathogen into Renaissance Europe after contracting it during their voyage to the New World? While it is generally agreed that the first recorded epidemic of syphilis occurred in Europe in 1495, controversy has raged ever since over the origin of the pathogen.Sadly, our national silence may be related to our difficulty discussing the roles that race and poverty play in these trends. In 2005, for example, the rate of gonorrhea (a curable STD) among African Americans was 18 times greater than the rate among whites. The contrast in rates for HIV-AIDS, syphilis ...

IBD follows neuropathic pain or neuralgia (abnormal sensations)
There are more immune cells in the gut than anywhere else in the body. Indeed, the system's occasional failures – as in the inflammatory bowel diseases ulcerative colitis and Crohn's – are mostly a result of excessive zeal. Our forebears' earthier existence introduced them early in life to hordes of harmless microbes. When these enter the gut, the immune system learns to tolerate them. But too much clean living denies the system its chance of acquiring self-control. This "hygiene hypothesis" could account for the increase in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The term inflammatory bowel disease describes a group of chronic ...

Toothpaste containing fluoride: how much is enough?
Appropriate amount of fluoride is essential to help prevent tooth decay. To prevent dental decay recently Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary, called for fluoride to be added to more areas of England’s water supply. But all the benefits of fluoride, intake above optimal levels creates a risk for enamel (dental) fluorosis, too much can lead to a permanent discoloring of the teeth (brown teeth), called dental fluorosis, when children “ate toothpaste”. Fluoride affects teeth during the development stage before emerging through the gums. Enamel fluorosis is not a disease but affects the way teeth look. Most cases of fluorosis result ...

Napkin (nappy) or diaper rash: cause and treatment
In the neonatal period and early infancy the skin's defenses are not yet fully developed, and it is much more vulnerable to chemical, physical and microbial attack. Apart from the depressed skin defenses, the surface area to weight ratio is higher than at other times and there is a greater hazard from increased absorption of topically applied medicaments. The vascular network in the skin seems more labile than in the adult. A rash may change from a vivid scarlet to a pale pink within a few hours. During the early weeks of life the newborn child possesses hormones that found in ...

The more I make bread, the more I am convinced of the importance of the kitchen being in the best position in the house. When we designed and built our house, I was determined that the kitchen should have a view and be on the front of the house. Now that it’s six-fifteen of a summer morning and I’m up early, kneading bread, because we’ve run out again, I’m especially happy to be looking out over a sun-soaked landscape to the distant mountains. Every time you make bread you’re guaranteed a good ten minutes of contemplation as you knead it, ...

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring phytoalexin produced by some higher plants in response to injury or fungal infection. Phytoalexins are chemical substances produced by plants as a defense against infection by pathogenic microorganisms, such as fungi. Alexin is from the Greek, meaning to ward off or to protect. Resveratrol may also have alexin-like activity for humans.
Researchers around the world report that resveratrol, known as a red wine molecule. It was recently described as “a boon for treating Alzheimer’s disease” by virtue of its ability to activate the Sirtuin 1 DNA repair gene.
Remarkably, resveratrol does not inhibit the production of the ...
