(i) SYMPTOMS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE
a. Local symptoms:
1. Pain.
2. Gum bleeding.
3. Foul taste.
4. Discharge of pus.
5. Hypersensitivity of teeth.
6. Excessive salivation.
b. Systemic symptoms:
1. Fever.
2. Anorexia.
3. Headache
4. Loss of appetite.
5. Constipation.
(ii) SIGNS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE.
1. Formation of plaque and calculus.
2. Loosening of the teeth.
3. Pocket formation.
4. Bone destruction-Vertical and Horizontal.
5. Gingival signs:
-Recession
-Hyperplasia
- Ulceration
-Redness
-Desquamation
-Swelling
-Inflammation.
6. Local lymphadenopathy.
PERIODONTAL PAIN BY ITS DISEASE
ANUG : Constant radiating, growing pain, intensified by hot food or mastication.
Chronic periodontitis :Localized dull steady pain, intensified by pressure.
Chronic periodontal abscess :Dull, growing pain, diminished by bite down on and grind.
Periodontal pocket : Localized pain after eating, radiating deep to the bone.
Traumatic periodontitis : Throbbing pain, intensified by pressure.
Acute periodontal abscess :Throbbing radiating pain.
Desquamative gingivitis : Burning sensation, intensified by air inhalation or thermal changes.
CAUSES OF MOUTH ODOR
A. Local causes of mouth odour
1. Retention of odoriferous food particles on and between the teeth.
2. Coating tongue.
3. Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis.
4. Dehydration.
5. Dental caries.
6. Artificial denture.
7. Smoking.
8. Healing surgical or extraction wound.
9. Chronic periodontitis /Pocket formation.
B. Extra oral causes of mouth odor/systemic causes:
1. Disease of adjacent structure associated with rhinitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis etc.
2. Disease of the lung, for example-
- Chronic bronchitis.
- Broncheactasis
- Lung abscess.
- Gangrene
- Pulmonary tuberculosis.
3. Alcoholic breath.
4. Acetone odour of diabetes.
5. Uremic breath in kidney diseases.
