Dear doctor,
Maybe it is more that I fear going into bed at night because I won't fall asleep. My mind whirls and then I get frightened that I am not going to sleep - so then the worrying of falling asleep begins. .. This all began 40 years ago, when I was young. I was sleeping and my phone in the bedroom rang and startled me; the next night the blind fell and woke me and startled me; the following night, the phone rang again and awokened me, and that began my mind worrying about what is going to happen tonight - will I fall asleep and if I don't, I need to get up for work at 7 am. This went on nite after nite and I became really nervous and sick over it. I finally went to a doctor. He had said if I had gone to him when those worrisome thoughts it first began, he would have given me sleeping pills just to put me to sleep so I would not have had to worry about the not falling asleep. Those thoughts were ingrained in my mind and needless to say, they are still there - 40 years later. .. Well, that is what started my long bout with insomnia which never got any better with the years; I am still frightened to go into bed b/c I know I will not fall asleep. Sounds crazy but that is what happened. I wonder what disorder this would be called? No doctor could help me or tell me how to get the thoughts out of my mind. I take kolonopin and ambim when necessary to sleep but that does not help relax me to fall asleep. .. Would a sleep doctor help?
Thanks for listening,

Nisha,
I think you are excessively anxious for your state. Don't think it's worrisome. In this world, there is so many people in this world who cannot even sleep just for headache (migraine).Think this way'...u are happy all way .
yes, u are having insomnia, but it couldn't hamper ur daily life whatever already 40 yrs gone you are getting up 7 am for ur work, fixing up all others. So, take it easy.
Think, its ur normal life. You are become habituated in your own way. Just try to divert your mind any other way. Try to forget that past what's make u anxious. Here are some tips to fall you asleep.
.
Reduce caffeine and sugar intake at night. Both act as stimulants, and the sugar can also make it difficult to get up in the morning.
Try using an alarm clock to remind you to GO to sleep. It is very important that you get enough sleep at night to get you through the next day.
Procrastination itself is stressful. Whatever you want to do tomorrow, try to do it today; whatever you want to do today, do it now.
Allow extra time for everything you have to do. If you think an assignment will take one hour, make sure you leave 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete it. That way, you'll have extra time instead of being time pressured.
Make friends with non-stressed people. Nothing can promote anxiety faster than associating with other stressed-out people.
Check your breathing. Remember to breathe. Deep breathing helps to relax your entire body and reduce muscle tension.
Become more flexible. Some things are worth NOT doing perfectly, and some issues are well to compromise upon, whereas others are clearly priorities.
If an especially "unpleasant" task faces you, get it over with early in the day. The rest of your day can then be less anxious. Do your most laborious homework assignment FIRST
Try to recall a pleasant episode from your life and relive the moment, lingering on the little things, the details that made it special.
Do something relaxing just before bedtime (reading or television) so that you don't dwell on worrisome issues. If you can't fall asleep within 30 minutes, get up and move to another room and engage in a quiet activity until you feel sleepy.
One method of preventing worries from keeping you awake is to keep a journal before going to bed. List all issues that worry you. By this method you transfer your worries from your thoughts to paper, leaving your mind quieter and more ready to fall asleep
Try sex. For some, it's a terrific remedy for sleeping problems. But for others, it may keep you up. Or maybe your partner chooses inconvenient times to rouse you. Bring in a little discipline along with the foreplay: Avoid nights when you have to get up early for work. Have sex at a time that works for both of you
. Get up. If you can't sleep, get out of bed. Grab a book. Read for half an hour to an hour. Now, try again. You may be able to sleep, finally.
Count backward from 100 or try to count from one to 1,000, picturing the numerals behind your eyes, each as large and bright as a highway billboard, until you nod off. If you catch yourself skipping numbers, you have to start over again. Doesnt 1,000 seem like a very far-away number? One thats almost impossible to reach.
Play a soothing relaxation tape or CD. Pop in a tape or a CD with soothing nature sounds. Play it at a low volume. Let the sounds of the beach, forest, or a rainstorm lull you to sleep. It might be helpful to adjust or forget that worst phone ring sound too.
Nisha, Don't think it will not work. Start it from today. You might fall asleep.
Good night! Sweet dream.
