I've noticed recently that i've been shedding my hair a bit more than usual. I notice it in my brush and when I wash my hair or it gets wet. The only change in my lifestyle that I can say is that earlier in the spring and summer I lost about 20 pounds. I'm taking multivitamins now (with vitamin b and a little bit of biotin), and trying to eat more protein. I also recently got over bulimia. I've been a vegetarian for a few years too. I'm really scared that within a few months I might be bald or have bald spots. Can anyone help me? When is this increase in shedding going to go away?
(by the way, there isn't a history of hair loss in my family, and i'm 15) (also, i'm not on birth control or anything either) (i also tend to be a bit anxious and this is stressing me out too. Do you think that could be the cause?) (and how long will it take to notice myself "shedding" less hair?)

Daax, . We naturally lose about 100 hairs a day so if you are losing more than this, it is something that should be looked into. Please don't worry. An apparent increase in hair loss is a very common experience and will normally settle down. Stress is one of the main contributory factors. Anyway, there are some factors that attribute hair shedding:
* You didn't write whether you have dandruff or not. It is a nothing but Fungus Infection (Ringworm) of the Scalp. If that u should be trated it at 1st.
*Do you have thyroid problem? Thyroid can also be reason for hair loss, so be sure to have the condition looked at.
*Are you over-processing your hair ie. coloring, bleaching, perming and straightening, if done improperly, can cause hair to break off or fall out, and you'll have to wait for healthy hair to grow back in. Frequent relaxing using a hot comb can cause permanent hair loss.
* Are u taking any certain drugs except ur multivitamin? Check ur multivitamin whether it contains iron ,zinc, vitamin B, C, E, copper. Iron deficiency may cause hair loss (Women who have heavy menstrual periods may develop iron deficiency ).Those help prevent hair loss and graying. Certain drugs can also take their toll on once flourishing and healthy tresses. Examples include some of the medicines used for the following: gout, arthritis, depression, heart problems, high blood pressure, or blood thinner. However, these conditions are usually temporary, the hair shedding stops and healthy re-growth occurs with time.
Some people who go on crash diets that are low in protein, or have severely abnormal eating habits, may develop protein malnutrition. The body will save protein by shifting growing hairs into the resting phase. Massive hair shedding can occur two to three months later. Hair can then be pulled out by the roots fairly easily. This condition can be reversed and prevented by eating the proper amount of protein and, when dieting, maintaining adequate protein intake.
* Moreover hormonal effects may be evaluated in women by asking about menstrual cycles, pregnancies, and menopause. When a woman is pregnant, more of her hairs will be growing. However, after a woman delivers her baby, many hairs enter the resting phase of the hair cycle. Within two to three months, some women will notice large amounts of hair coming out in their brushes and combs. This can last one to six months, but resolves completely in most cases.
Women who lose hair while taking birth control pills usually have an inherited tendency for hair thinning. If hair thinning occurs, a woman can consult her gynecologist about switching to another birth control pill.
If you find that suddenly your hair is falling out in handfuls, it would be a good idea to mention the fact to the doctor or a dermatologist.
I do hope this information is of help to you

Dear Daax, you are too young now…At around this age, hormonal changes occur which sometimes cause hair loss. As Lodd has mentioned, that falling of 100 hairs daily is normal, now, you have to find out whether your hair fall exceeds the normal rate. If so, then immediately take measures against it so that you can stop further hair loss but please, for God’s sake, don’t use any chemical product. It will further contribute to your hair loss.
You know, I have seen my fiancé going crazy when he started losing a hell lot of hair. His hair loss was so heavy, that he was almost at the verge of getting bald. He was only 25 then. We both became so upset and distressed too.:( Then, hair loss herbal treatment was like a savior. It took about 2-3 weeks to stop hair loss. But it was really a hit... And around a month new hair started growing. He is looking young again..:)
