WELCOME TO OUR SITE
Health is a term that refers to a combination of the
absence of illness, the ability to cope with everyday activities,
physical fitness, and high quality of life. In any organism, health
can be said to be a "state of balance," or analogous to
homeostasis, and it also implies good prospects for continued
survival. Wellness is a term sometimes used to describe the
psychological state of being healthy, but is most often used in the
field of alternative medicine to describe one's state of being.
Health is maintained through the science of medicine, but can
also be improved by individual effort. Physical fitness, weight
loss, healthy eating, stress management training and stopping
smoking and other substance abuse are examples of steps to improve
one's health. Workplace programs are recognized by an increasingly
large number of companies for their value in improving health and
well-being of their employees, and increasing morale, loyalty and
productivity at work.

Some skin care cream may have risk of cancer
According to a new study by researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey, several commonly used skin creams may cause skin tumors – at least in mice, Reuters reported.Dr. Allan Conney, professor of cancer and leukemia research at Rutgers, discovered the risk while testing a theory that caffeine could prevent skin cancer, according to the report."We sort of got into this by accident," Conney told Reuters. "We wanted a safe cream that we could put the caffeine into."Conney and colleagues stumbled across the findings after they exposed hairless mice to ultraviolet radiation to mimic sun exposure. Afterward, they applied four ...

Cocoa butter no help for stretch marks during pregnancy
Applying cocoa butter lotion during pregnancy does not help prevent the stretch marks that many women develop, according to a new study.Stretch marks, or striae gravidarum as doctors refer to them, typically occur on the abdomen and breasts, but can also appear on the hips, thighs, and buttocks. The cause of the problem is unknown, but many women believe that rubbing cocoa butter on the skin can help prevent the marks.Although scientific evidence supporting the use of cocoa butter is lacking, many physicians and midwives continue to recommend it.In the present study, Dr. A. H Nassar and colleagues sought to ...

Measuring blood protein is better indicator than cholesterol
Measuring proteins that carry cholesterol in the blood may give a better estimate of heart attack risk than measuring cholesterol, a major study finds. The study focused on the ratio of two of the proteins, called apolipoprotein B100 (ApoB) and apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1). The international team of researchers studied data on more than 27,000 people and found that the ratio of apolipoprotein B100 (ApoB) to apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) accounted for 54 percent of the risk of heart attack. The cholesterol in your blood comes from two sources: the foods you eat and your liver. However, your liver makes all of the cholesterol ...

Man's age might be a cause of infertility
When it comes to age and fertility, women fear a “biological clock” and are urged to have children early. But men are rarely given the same advice and often don’t worry about fertility when postponing marriage and children. But a growing body of research now shows the age of the potential father matters too. French researchers have collected data from more than 21,000 artificial inseminations involving 12,200 infertile couples. The data, presented yesterday at the 24th annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Barcelona, found that pregnancy rates decrease and miscarriages increase when a father is ...

Heavy Breakfast may help to fight against hunger and obesity
The American practice of reporting students' body mass scores to parents originated a few years ago as just one tactic in a war on childhood obesity that would be fought with fresh, low-fat cafeteria offerings and expanded physical education. Now, inspired by impressive results in a few well-financed programs, states including Delaware, South Carolina and Tennessee have jumped on the B.M.I. bandwagon, turning the reports — in casual parlance, obesity report cards — into a new rite of childhood. Our kids love porridge for breakfast, cooked with 1/2 full cream milk and 1/2 water, and sprinkled with 1/2 a tsp of ...

Keep eyes on your systolic blood pressure only; new research suggested
Systolic pressure is the force of blood in the arteries as the heart beats. It is shown as the top number in a blood pressure reading. High blood pressure is 140 and higher for systolic pressure. Diastolic pressure does not need to be high for you to have high blood pressure. When that happens, the condition is called "isolated systolic hypertension," or ISH. A blood pressure level of 140/90 mmHg or higher is considered high. About two-thirds of people over age 65 have high blood pressure.Systolic blood pressure demonstrates the maximum arterial pressure during contraction of the left ventricle of ...

CFC asthma inhaler user should ask their doctor about switching now
Old-fashioned asthma inhalers that contain environment-harming chemicals will no longer be sold at year's end — and the government is urging patients not to wait until the last minute to switch to newer alternatives.Patients use inhalers to dispense airway-relaxing albuterol during asthma attacks.Chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, once were widely used to propel the drug into the lungs. But CFC-containing consumer products are being phased out because CFCs damage the Earth's protective ozone layer. As of Dec. 31, asthma inhalers with CFCs can no longer be made or sold in the U.S. Inhalers instead will be powered by ozone-friendly HFAs, ...

Prevention of West Nile virus
In light of the elevated risk of West Nile virus, local and state health officials are asking people to follow these precautions. People who think they have West Nile virus infection are encouraged to contact their health-care provider. In 2007, there were six human cases of WNV in Massachusetts. While WNV can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe disease. WNV is usually spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Stretching before exercise increase joint strength
Short-duration stretching before exercise temporarily improves range of joint motion and doesn't weaken muscles, says new research that fuels the debate about whether stretching before exercise reduces muscle strength and performance. In this study, moderately active, non-athlete participants did two, four and eight-minute sessions of lower leg and ankle stretching. The participants' exercise performance was assessed before and immediately after, and also 10, 20 and 30 minutes after stretching. The stretching didn't cause any changes in muscle strength, but did improve range of motion of the ankle joint. The findings were published in the August issue of Medicine & Science in Sports ...

Those 30 minutes of daily exercise you think you’re supposed to do to keep weight off? You need to step it up, people. Keep food record what you eat for better Weight Loss
There's a reason so many doctors and nutritionists recommend keeping a food diary when you're trying to lose weight: It actually appears to work. The findings were part of a weight-loss maintenance trial whose initial results were reported in March. After analyzing the data on weight loss to see which factors made a difference, researchers concluded that the more days a ...

Choice of food/ fuel to workout best for you
When planning your exercise sessions, it’s important to factor in how you’ll fuel those workouts beforehand and how you’ll replenish lost energy afterward. You don't want to eat too much food before exercising, because if you become sluggish, nauseated or throw up, you've lost that workout.Your body needs fuel for exercise, but eating a large meal right before working out can cause discomfort. Exercising muscles draws blood away from the stomach, slowing digestion and causing stomach upset. To avoid this, wait one to four hours after a meal before exercising. The larger the meal, the longer you should wait. Only elite ...

Loneliness associated with memory degradation

Working memory relates to the information one can pay attention to and manipulate.Loneliness is complex and is associated with multiple, interrelated factors. For the older people interviewed for this research, its origins can be traced to experiences throughout the life course. ...

Americans are overweight. Is dietary fat the reason? Previous generations often consumed higher percentages of dietary fat than many overweight people do today yet did not suffer from obesity. Despite eating low fat foods, the fat epidemic continues unabated. Why? One reason may be the decrease of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in the diet that is the result of the trend towards “low-fat” and red meat-free diets. Fat that is not used for energy production is converted into new stored fat cells. CLA is essential for the transport of dietary fat into cells where it is used to build muscle ...

The more I make bread, the more I am convinced of the importance of the kitchen being in the best position in the house. When we designed and built our house, I was determined that the kitchen should have a view and be on the front of the house. Now that it’s six-fifteen of a summer morning and I’m up early, kneading bread, because we’ve run out again, I’m especially happy to be looking out over a sun-soaked landscape to the distant mountains. Every time you make bread you’re guaranteed a good ten minutes of contemplation as you knead it, ...

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring phytoalexin produced by some higher plants in response to injury or fungal infection. Phytoalexins are chemical substances produced by plants as a defense against infection by pathogenic microorganisms, such as fungi. Alexin is from the Greek, meaning to ward off or to protect. Resveratrol may also have alexin-like activity for humans.
Researchers around the world report that resveratrol, known as a red wine molecule. It was recently described as “a boon for treating Alzheimer’s disease” by virtue of its ability to activate the Sirtuin 1 DNA repair gene.
Remarkably, resveratrol does not inhibit the production of the ...
