WELCOME TO OUR SITE
Health is a term that refers to a combination of the
absence of illness, the ability to cope with everyday activities,
physical fitness, and high quality of life. In any organism, health
can be said to be a "state of balance," or analogous to
homeostasis, and it also implies good prospects for continued
survival. Wellness is a term sometimes used to describe the
psychological state of being healthy, but is most often used in the
field of alternative medicine to describe one's state of being.
Health is maintained through the science of medicine, but can
also be improved by individual effort. Physical fitness, weight
loss, healthy eating, stress management training and stopping
smoking and other substance abuse are examples of steps to improve
one's health. Workplace programs are recognized by an increasingly
large number of companies for their value in improving health and
well-being of their employees, and increasing morale, loyalty and
productivity at work.

Influenza vaccine during pregnancy may protect both mother and offspring
A flu shot provided to a woman during her pregnancy can help shield her newborn against the potentially deadly infection, researchers report. The study, conducted in Bangladesh, bolsters longstanding U.S. recommendations that pregnant women get vaccinated against influenza -- especially since it is also recommended that infants under 6 months of age not receive the shot."Our data show that a single dose of maternal influenza vaccine provides a considerable two-for-one benefit to both mothers and their young infants," wrote a team led by Dr. Mark C. Steinhoff, of Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health, in Baltimore. The study was published ...

Man's fertility may be lowered by heated car seat
Scientists warn that the seats could damage sperm production by raising men's temperature to unhealthy levels. The study follows warnings that keeping a mobile phone in a trouser pocket for too long or extensive use of a laptop computer can also affect fertility. An optimal temperature of between 35 and 36 °C is needed to produce healthy sperm.Even small temperature changes can significantly affect sperm counts, which are why the testes are outside the body, which has an average temperature of 37 °C.Scientists tested the effect of heated car seats on 30 healthy men.Fox News adds, "Study authors said male fertility is ...

Irradiated spinach and iceberg lettuce may kill certain bacteria: FDA
After two years of nearly constant food-borne illness outbreaks and recalls of everything from tainted peanut butter to tons of hamburger meat, the Food and Drug Administration's decision last week to allow the irradiation of lettuce and spinach to kill dangerous bacteria didn't surprise anyone in the food industry.Nor did it solve a long-simmering debate over whether the agency's penchant for prescribing such technical fixes to biological problems makes sense. There are strong feelings on both sides of the argument, and the lettuce/spinach decision brought them once again to the surface.Zapping spinach and iceberg lettuce with a tiny shot of ...

Some skin care cream may have risk of cancer
According to a new study by researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey, several commonly used skin creams may cause skin tumors – at least in mice, Reuters reported.Dr. Allan Conney, professor of cancer and leukemia research at Rutgers, discovered the risk while testing a theory that caffeine could prevent skin cancer, according to the report."We sort of got into this by accident," Conney told Reuters. "We wanted a safe cream that we could put the caffeine into."Conney and colleagues stumbled across the findings after they exposed hairless mice to ultraviolet radiation to mimic sun exposure. Afterward, they applied four ...

Cocoa butter no help for stretch marks during pregnancy
Applying cocoa butter lotion during pregnancy does not help prevent the stretch marks that many women develop, according to a new study.Stretch marks, or striae gravidarum as doctors refer to them, typically occur on the abdomen and breasts, but can also appear on the hips, thighs, and buttocks. The cause of the problem is unknown, but many women believe that rubbing cocoa butter on the skin can help prevent the marks.Although scientific evidence supporting the use of cocoa butter is lacking, many physicians and midwives continue to recommend it.In the present study, Dr. A. H Nassar and colleagues sought to ...

Measuring blood protein is better indicator than cholesterol
Measuring proteins that carry cholesterol in the blood may give a better estimate of heart attack risk than measuring cholesterol, a major study finds. The study focused on the ratio of two of the proteins, called apolipoprotein B100 (ApoB) and apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1). The international team of researchers studied data on more than 27,000 people and found that the ratio of apolipoprotein B100 (ApoB) to apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) accounted for 54 percent of the risk of heart attack. The cholesterol in your blood comes from two sources: the foods you eat and your liver. However, your liver makes all of the cholesterol ...

Man's age might be a cause of infertility
When it comes to age and fertility, women fear a “biological clock” and are urged to have children early. But men are rarely given the same advice and often don’t worry about fertility when postponing marriage and children. But a growing body of research now shows the age of the potential father matters too. French researchers have collected data from more than 21,000 artificial inseminations involving 12,200 infertile couples. The data, presented yesterday at the 24th annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Barcelona, found that pregnancy rates decrease and miscarriages increase when a father is ...

Heavy Breakfast may help to fight against hunger and obesity
The American practice of reporting students' body mass scores to parents originated a few years ago as just one tactic in a war on childhood obesity that would be fought with fresh, low-fat cafeteria offerings and expanded physical education. Now, inspired by impressive results in a few well-financed programs, states including Delaware, South Carolina and Tennessee have jumped on the B.M.I. bandwagon, turning the reports — in casual parlance, obesity report cards — into a new rite of childhood. Our kids love porridge for breakfast, cooked with 1/2 full cream milk and 1/2 water, and sprinkled with 1/2 a tsp of ...

Vit. B12 important for older brain function
Older individuals with low levels of vitamin B12 seem to be at increased risk of having brain atrophy or shrinkage, new research suggests. Brain atrophy is associated with Alzheimer's disease and impaired cognitive function.Although the study, published in the Sept. 8 issue of Neurology, can't confirm that lower levels of B12 actually cause brain atrophy, they do suggest that "we ought to be more aware of our B12 status, especially people who are vulnerable to B12 deficiency [elderly, vegetarians, pregnant and lactating women, infants], and take steps to maintain it by eating a balanced and varied diet," said study co-author ...

Two cases of facial transplantation shown useful for severe disfigurement
Facial transplantation can be a useful treatment for severe disfigurement, although it is not without risks, according to two case reports involving facial damage caused by a bear attack and by growth of a rare aggressive tumor. Both reports appear in the August 23rd issue of The Lancet. In the first report, Dr. Shuzhong Guo and colleagues from the Fourth Military Medical University in Xian, China, describe the 2-year outcomes of a 30-year-old man on whom they performed a partial facial allotransplantation in 2006.In October 2004, the man was attacked by a bear, causing severe damage to the right side of ...

Bacterial/ fungal infection during pregnancy may have risk of premature birth
Infections may play a bigger role in premature birth than doctors have thought, says a new study that found almost one in seven women in preterm labor harbored bacteria or fungi in their amniotic fluid. It's a small study, and it doesn't prove that the germs triggered the early labor. But Monday's research used specialized molecular testing to uncover microbes that ordinary methods miss, and thus uncovered more women with simmering infections than previously estimated. The more heavily infected the amniotic fluid, the more likely the woman was to deliver a younger, sicker baby, researchers reported in PLoS One, the online journal of ...

Prevention of West Nile virus
In light of the elevated risk of West Nile virus, local and state health officials are asking people to follow these precautions. There is no specific treatment for West Nile virus other than to treat symptoms. People who think they have West Nile virus infection are encouraged to contact their health-care provider. In 2007, there were six human cases of WNV in Massachusetts. While WNV can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe disease. WNV is usually spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. So far this year, ...

Stretching before exercise increase joint strength
Short-duration stretching before exercise temporarily improves range of joint motion and doesn't weaken muscles, says new research that fuels the debate about whether stretching before exercise reduces muscle strength and performance. In this study, moderately active, non-athlete participants did two, four and eight-minute sessions of lower leg and ankle stretching. The participants' exercise performance was assessed before and immediately after, and also 10, 20 and 30 minutes after stretching. The stretching didn't cause any changes in muscle strength, but did improve range of motion of the ankle joint. The findings were published in the August issue of Medicine & Science in Sports ...

How much exercise for weight loss benefit?
Those 30 minutes of daily exercise you think you’re supposed to do to keep weight off? You need to step it up, people. As much as twice that amount may be needed to lose weight and keep it off.A recent study found that overweight and obese women needed to exercise about an hour a day, five days a week to sustain weight loss. The findings bolster what some health experts — and those who have lost weight and kept it off — have been saying for years: copious amounts of exercise and adherence to a strict diet are necessary to ...

Keep food record what you eat for better Weight Loss
There's a reason so many doctors and nutritionists recommend keeping a food diary when you're trying to lose weight: It actually appears to work. The case for food diaries (or food records or journals) got a little stronger today, when weight-loss researchers reported that a large, multicenter study suggests that tracking what goes in your mouth can double the amount of weight lost. The findings were part of a weight-loss maintenance trial whose initial results were reported in March. After analyzing the data on weight loss to see which factors made a difference, researchers concluded that the more days a ...

Choice of food/ fuel to workout best for you
When planning your exercise sessions, it’s important to factor in how you’ll fuel those workouts beforehand and how you’ll replenish lost energy afterward. You don't want to eat too much food before exercising, because if you become sluggish, nauseated or throw up, you've lost that workout.Your body needs fuel for exercise, but eating a large meal right before working out can cause discomfort. Exercising muscles draws blood away from the stomach, slowing digestion and causing stomach upset. To avoid this, wait one to four hours after a meal before exercising. The larger the meal, the longer you should wait. Only elite ...

Americans are overweight. Is dietary fat the reason? Previous generations often consumed higher percentages of dietary fat than many overweight people do today yet did not suffer from obesity. Despite eating low fat foods, the fat epidemic continues unabated. Why? One reason may be the decrease of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in the diet that is the result of the trend towards “low-fat” and red meat-free diets. Fat that is not used for energy production is converted into new stored fat cells. CLA is essential for the transport of dietary fat into cells where it is used to build muscle ...

I am a 41 y.o. female. My saliva test indicate overall low cortisol (adrenal exhaustion), low DHEAS, and low estriadol. I wonder if the DHEA I am starting tomorrow will correct the low estriadol or do I need to supplement w/Preg or Progesterone? Research thus far has not been very clear as to which one of these would be best for low Estriadol.
Thanks in advance.

The more I make bread, the more I am convinced of the importance of the kitchen being in the best position in the house. When we designed and built our house, I was determined that the kitchen should have a view and be on the front of the house. Now that it’s six-fifteen of a summer morning and I’m up early, kneading bread, because we’ve run out again, I’m especially happy to be looking out over a sun-soaked landscape to the distant mountains. Every time you make bread you’re guaranteed a good ten minutes of contemplation as you knead it, ...

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring phytoalexin produced by some higher plants in response to injury or fungal infection. Phytoalexins are chemical substances produced by plants as a defense against infection by pathogenic microorganisms, such as fungi. Alexin is from the Greek, meaning to ward off or to protect. Resveratrol may also have alexin-like activity for humans.
Researchers around the world report that resveratrol, known as a red wine molecule. It was recently described as “a boon for treating Alzheimer’s disease” by virtue of its ability to activate the Sirtuin 1 DNA repair gene.
Remarkably, resveratrol does not inhibit the production of the ...
